Beyond Keycards—Modern Considerations for Access Control Systems

Using keycard entry systems has been the standard operating protocol for decades. Handheld keycards contain unique codes recognized by a dedicated reader when presented to the access control device. Simple and efficient, this system dates back to the 1970s. So, why ruin a good thing?

That’s a little like wondering why we’re not using the cell phones invented around the same time. Technology has inexorably marched forward with far better solutions that offer enhanced security, analytics, and ease.

Here, we’ll explore how access control systems can improve building safety and security in today’s world.

Frictionless Access Control

In today’s business, the new keycards are advanced biometrics and smartphone mobile access. Staff use their face, finger, or hand to gain entry, ensuring only those with current permissions gain access. It’s a credential that can never be lost, stolen, or given to someone else.

Mobile access control enables employees to use their smartphone as the “key.” While some systems require them to place their phone by the reader, others allow a person to keep their phone in their pocket or carrier, detecting its presence using Bluetooth Low Energy technology.

Gone is the list of registered keycards. Instead, after staff are enrolled, gaining entrance is as easy as walking through the door.

The Benefits of the Cloud

Leveraging the cloud enables administrators and owners to manage every point of entry in the cloud using a web-based interface. Whether your business is in one building, several separate buildings, or multiple locations, you manage it all from the same platform.

In minutes, you can enter a new staff member into the database or remove a recently terminated employee. These systems are scalable and can grow as your needs and organization advance.

Companies also use these access control systems in the interior, securing storage rooms, offices, and other spaces with restricted access. From the same interface, you can access reports showing who entered these rooms and how long they were in each one. You’ll also gain detailed data about when employees, visitors, and vendors arrive and leave.

Remote Access

You can pull up the platform from any mobile device, gaining access no matter where you are in the world. Should a vendor arrive when no one’s available, you’ll receive a notification and can unlock the door from anywhere, securing the building after they leave.

Scheduled visitors receive a QR code via text message or email, which they can easily scan to gain entry into the building or a restricted area.

Detecting Intrusion

Should someone attempt entry without the proper credentials, the system sends immediate notifications to owners and administrators. The situation may warrant an immediate lockdown of the buildings and a call to law enforcement or providing remote access for an employee who forgot their smartphone.

When integrated with video surveillance, a security camera zooms in on the area, capturing an image of the person who attempted to enter.
